Triumph Trident T160 850 Hyde

Here we have a superb matching numbers Triumph Trident T160 with a Hyde 850 conversion. The motor was refreshed back in 2009 with new standard main bearing shells, piston rings, valve oil seals. She has had various parts upgraded to stainless which include:  wheel rims and spokes, mudguards, starter cover, handlebars, both front and rear brake master cylinders & Exhaust headers and collector box. A heavier duty battery has been fitted along with upgraded high tension power cables to give extremely reliable starting, helped further with a MK3 Boyer electronic ignition. The Triumph has been subject to a full fluids service and a new front tyre and a road test.

‘That three-cylinder mill forms the solid gold heart of Trident appeal,’ reckoned Bike magazine in 1978, going on to declare that ‘the Triumph Trident is the best British motorcycle ever made.’ Essentially a ‘Tiger-and-a-half’, the Triumph and BSA 750 triples were launched in the UK in 1969, just in time to be up-staged by Honda’s four-cylinder CB750. Differences between the Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3 were more than just cosmetic: the two models used different frames and in BSA guise the motor’s cylinder block was slightly inclined. Only the Trident survived the BSA-Triumph Group’s collapse in 1972, continuing as the T150V (with 5-speed gearbox) and later the heavily revised and re-styled T160 (using the BSA-type engine). The number of important production race victories achieved (notably by the works Triumph known as ‘Slippery Sam’) is eloquent testimony to how effective a high-speed road-burner a well-fettled triple can be. Today the models enjoy an enthusiastic following worldwide and are supported by a first-rate owners’ club – the TR3OC – and numerous recognised specialists.

Motorcycle additional information

The Trident is in overall excellent condition, but please take the time to inspect the close up pictures of the tank, it is the original paintwork complete with hand painted lines. It is however showing it’s age and has slight bubbling of the paint finish as can been seen on both sides of the tank in the pictures.
